Planning Moving Forward at Needham Street, Newton MA

The planning for the Needham Street development at the Upper Falls in Newton is moving forward. CUBE 3 Studio has been working with Northland (Developer), Stantec (Urban Designer), and VHB (Civil Engineers) developing the design, strategy and improvements for Upper Falls for a few years. After much planning, the development team has revealed the project details to the community.

“A Newton developer just unveiled the conceptual outlines of a project that could dramatically transform Newton Upper Falls – connecting Needham and Chestnuts streets with a new neighborhood of shops and apartments and streets.

Mayor Setti Warren called the plans “a really exciting concept” that could be “transformational” for the area.

The project, included among the mayor’s top affordable housing priorities, could include up to 950 rental units, a mix of market-rate and affordable apartments…Northland’s vision includes up to 950 residential units, 175,000 square feet of office space and approximately 200,000 square feet of retail space.

That includes around half a dozen apartment buildings, most with first-floor retail, plus townhouses adjacent to the Upper Falls Greenway. All units would be rentals. The project would enhance and expand Tower Road and Charlemont Street, and create a new “Main Street” cutting through the development, from Needham Street up to “Pettee Lane,” a roadway that would run adjacent to the Upper Falls Greenway.

Northland expects to file plans during the first half of 2017.” Read More
