Design Competition // Bee Breeders San Francisco Housing Challenge

Who doesn’t love a challenge? We were up for it when we entered the Architecture Competitions // Bee Breeders San Francisco Housing Challenge earlier this summer. The competition theme was “affordable housing,” and asked designers to address the housing shortage (and the insane cost of rent) in San Fran. In addition to the challenge of the competition, our team persevered through the pandemic and necessity to work from home, disciplining themselves to come to every meeting with clear and concise ideas as they collaboratively investigated one of the greatest challenges—the cost and availability of “affordable” housing. This helped facilitate a rich forum where ideas were generated, and through discussion, accumulated quickly. That momentum carried them into the final phases of production, where they were able to collaborate towards a single goal and together build an architectural idea that is rooted in and challenges the realities of housing affordability: the societal implications of zonings regulations, added cost savings in modular shipping, varied models of housing ownership, and everything in between. Thanks to the experience our #team has a deeper knowledge base to lean on and a heightened sense of empathy when approaching multifamily and student housing projects. #CUBE3
