The history of professional architecture is long and rich, and during #BlackHistoryMonth, and always truthfully, it is imperative that we use the opportunity to honor and support the pioneers who have helped black-owned businesses grow and thrive. McKissack & McKissack is the oldest minority-owned architecture/engineering firm in the United States. According to the firm’s website, “Its roots go back to before the Civil War, when a slave named Moses McKissack learned the building trade from his owner.” It was his grandson, Moses III, who launched the first McKissack & McKissack in Nashville, Tennessee. The year was 1905. The leaders of the firm today, twin sisters Cheryl and Deryl McKissack, continue to lead this thriving architecture business as the fifth generation of the family to carry on the building tradition.
