Paul R. Williams

With challenges ahead of him, but strong ambition leading his way, Paul R. Williams finished his education and earned his reputation as “Hollywood’s Architect” in the 1920s. Williams built a strong friendship with Frank Lloyd Wright and designed beautiful homes for stars like Frank Sinatra, Lucile Ball, and Cary Grant.

Williams was the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1923, and after a long-standing affiliation with the organization, the first African American awarded with the AIA’s 2017 Gold Medal, the highest annual honor recognizing individuals whose work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.

His history enriches ours. #blackhistorymonth
