Virgil Abloh

When the design world loses such an incredible talent, the loss is palpable. As it was when African American fashion designer, Virgil Abloh, passed away last November. While at school to become a qualified architect, Abloh was inspired by a building on the IIT campus designed by the architect Rem Koolhaas (who had also worked on runway collections for Prada) which helped spark his interests for fashion. Abloh was the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection before taking on more responsibility at the organization in 2021. He was also notably the CEO of Off-White, a fashion house he founded. Abloh was also influential in the art community and his solo art exhibition debuted at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 2019 before traveling to Atlanta, Boston, Brooklyn and then Doha Qatar. Overall, Abloh’s career was highly celebrated, but not nearly long enough. We are thankful he shared his gift with the world as he did. #BlackHistoryMonth
